Import Export Code

Import Export Code (IEC) is alphanumeric registration number of the person engaged in the business of importing and exporting of goods. Every person doing the business of import and export is required to mandatorily have IE code. Earlier a unique 10 digit numeric code was issued by the department. However, post GST in order to align PAN and GSTIN with IEC, the Permanent Account Number of the applicant shall be the IEC. Further, having PAN does not mean that the person can enter into import export transaction. They need to register their PAN with the Director General of Foreign Trade. For obtaining IEC, an applicant needs to apply online to the DGFT with correct details and fees. Once the same is submitted, DGFT issues the IEC allotment letter on the basis of self declaration of the applicant.
